A custom built camera sled outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed from the NOAA research vessel Tatoosh during August 2005. Video data from specific dives falling within the bounds of the HMPR-115-2004-03 survey area were reviewed to examine the benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery.
The camera survey was conducted to help address management questions of the OCNMS related to benthic communities and to groundtruth previous acoustic surveys.

Unknown. Since no acoustic tracking device was available, the positioning of the camera sled was assumed to be the position of the DGPS antenna on the vessel. The towpoint was offset 6.7m aft of the antennae. The camera was deployed from an A-frame off the stern of the vessel with an attempt to drop directly below the tow point and drift with the current to minimize positional errors. In some cases strong currents created increased cable layback, and thus increased positional error. The exact degree of this error is unknown and variable. Positional error would be minimized in shallower water.

Navigation information (along with time stamp) was extracted from digital overlay of video tapes recorded on Mini-DV media. A point file was created in ArcInfo 9.1 depicting the assumed position of the camera sled. no acoustic tracking device was available, the positioning of the camera sled was assumed to be the position of the DGPS antenna on the vessel. The towpoint was offset 6.7m aft of the antennae. The camera was deployed from an A-frame off the stern of the vessel with an attempt to drop directly below the tow point and drift with the current to minimize positional errors. In some cases strong currents created increased cable layback, and thus increased positional error. Video tapes were reviewed making note of primary and secondary substrate types, along with certain biological notations when deemed appropriate. Timestamp was noted on the video tapes at each substrate transition and assumed to remain constant until the next transition in sediment type was encountered. Substrate type was entered into an Excel spreadsheet format where timestamp was used to correlate sediment with positional information.
