Abstract

The Canadian ROPOS remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed from the NOAA Ship McAurthurII during May-June 2006 in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believed to exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling within the bounds of the HMPR-118-2005-03c survey area were reviewed to describe various benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery.

Abstract:

The Canadian ROPOS remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed from the NOAA Ship McAurthurII during May-June 2006 in an attempt to document the presence of critical hard bottom benthic habitats believed to exist in the waters of the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS). Video data from specific dives falling within the bounds of the HMPR-118-2005-03c survey area were reviewed to describe various benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery.

Purpose:

The ROV survey was conducted to help address OCNMS management questions related to benthic communities, groundtruth previous acoustic surveys, characterize the diversity, abundances, and health of living marine resources associated with hardbottom and soft bottom substrates, evaluate the fishing/harvest pressures on these critical habitats and their associated fauna in areas of high and low fishing intensity, generate GIS-compatible data on critical habitats, and provide support to sanctuary-wide interests on the west coast to address such topics as conditions of critical habitats, and fishing/harvest impacts in these areas.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 602081
Description:

The time stamp recorded to the video was recorded as Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), however the navigation files were based on GMT. To make the records match, the navigation time stamp was adjusted to PDT (ie reduced by 7 hours) using Microsoft Excel).

Process Date/Time: 2006-01-01 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 602082
Description:

The navigation files contained positions recorded every 0.2 tenths of a second to accommodate the high baud rate of the INS. The filter1D command in Generic Mapping Tools was used to reduce the data records to 1 second fixes.

Process Step 3

CC ID: 602083
Description:

A point file was created in ArcInfo 9.1 to depict the position of the ROV.

Process Step 4

CC ID: 602084
Description:

Video tapes were reviewed making note of primary and secondary substrate types, along with certain biological notations when deemed appropriate. Time stamp was noted on the video tapes at each substrate transition and assumed to remain constant until the next transition in sediment type was encountered. Substrate type was entered into an Excel spreadsheet format where timestamp was used to correlate sediment with positional information.
