Bathymetric and acoustic backscatter data were collected simultaneously in 84 survey blocks. Seventy five of these blocks were surveyed with 100% cover of backscatter imagery and nine blocks were surveyed with 50% backscatter coverage. These data were collected as source material for planned benthic habitat mapping. An earlier project had been completed to map the very-shallow subtidal and intertidal areas using optical methods. These mosaics were collected with the Edgetech 6205 sonar system in the San Francisco Bay. For this San Francisco Bay habitat mapping project, seventy-five survey blocks were acquired with the Edgetech 6205 sonar, as these seventy-five areas contained water depths that were predominantly shallower than 20 meters and thus more efficiently mapped using side-scan sonar methods. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Interferometric horizontal positioning met IHO Order 1A specifications, meaning the horizontal accuracy of the data had to be within 5 meters + 5% of depth. The actual horizontal accuracy of the data exceeded these requirements, as the navigation/position data for the vessel was post-processed using an Applanix SmartBase post-processed kinematic solution, resulting in vessel horizontal positioning RMS values under 5 centimeters. Likewise, the sonar was pole-mounted to the vessel, and equipment offsets were measured to an accuracy of approximately 1 centimeter (1 sigma level) using a Total Station. These factors created highly accurate horizontal positioning of the data that exceeded IHO Order 1A standards. Overlapping features in the imagery were examined to confirm accuracy standards were met.; Quantitative Value: 1.0 meters, Test that produced the value: Approximated maximum horizontal uncertainty in meters Vertical Positional Accuracy N/A - no vertical accuracy can be attributed to the imagery product. Completeness Report This data set was derived by mosaicking together lines in each survey block to generate a series of sonar side scan images throughout the survey area. No survey blocks contain missing data. Conceptual Consistency Overlapping data sets were analyzed for agreement. Imagery was visually inspected for artifacts and noise within each survey block. Interferometric side-scan backscatter data acquisition. These data were acquired using pole-mounted transducers on the M/V Locator and the M/V Julie Ann in JSF files using an Edgetech 6205. The Edgetech 6205 imagery was acquired in the raw JSF file format. The raw JSF file format data were then processed in CARIS HIPS and SIPS to correct for post-processed navigation/positioning, bottom-tracking, slant range, and gain normalization. The side scan imagery was mosaicked in the CARIS CSAR format then exported to Geo-tiff at 0.5-meter resolution.
