information
mapDigital
Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are a navigation safety device that transmits and monitors the location and characteristics of many vessels in U.S. and international waters in real-time. This dataset represents the density of vessel traffic in 2011 for the contiguous United States offshore waters from vessels with AIS transponders in 100 meter grid cells. The dataset is best interpreted using a high to low density scale and does not represent actual vessel counts.
To support coastal and ocean planning and other activities pursuant to the Energy Policy Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Rivers and Harbors Act and the Submerged Lands Act.

dataset
Accuracy
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000.
Completeness Report
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness.
Conceptual Consistency
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean.
1. Project all East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Great Lakes to NAD 83. 2. Use Mosaic to Raster tool to combine each regional raster per vessel type into a national vessel type raster. 3. Project final raster to Web Mercator.
