Data set is considered complete for existing state and federal fishing closures/restrictions in effect as of June 2015. The data do not include all spatially-explicit fishing regulations. The focus is on fishing closures and restrictions that generally persist through time, and do not include many fishing management measures that are used to open and close areas dynamically to manage seasons, fisheries stocks, and/or quotas. The geographic focus of the data is on the marine coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and do not include closures/restrictions in inland seas (Puget Sound) or estuaries. The data set includes closures/restrictions applicable to fishing/harvesting of fish and invertebrates, but not marine plants, aquaculture or mariculture. |
| Conceptual Consistency: |
Attributes were reviewed for consistency by comparing all unique values within each attribute. If source data included a coastline for a closed area, that coastline was retained. If data were developed from coordinates or a description and required a coastline, NOAA's Continually Updated Coastline (CUSP) was used. For a few sites where the only restriction/prohibition is for kelp harvesting or aquaculture, the text description from the regulation was retained (comm_closure or rec_closure), but the comm_fishing or rec_fishing attribute was set to "no site restrictions" to indicate that for fish and invertebrate fishing there are no restrictions. For a few Yelloweye Rockfish Conservation Areas (YRCA) that have not been implemented, the boundaries and type of closure are included, but comm_fishing and rec_fishing are set to "no site restrictions." |
