Artificial reefs provide new or enhanced hard-bottom habitat to areas that may or may not be habitat limited. Artificial habitat provides space that is quickly colonized by sessile organisms and provides new food sources, greater protection of juveniles by providing more space to be used as refuge, and a possible focal point for aggregating adults to spawn. Properly sited, constructed and managed reef sites, particularly multiple-site complexes, can be used to meet a variety of objectives. Traditionally, the majority of artificial reefs in United States coastal marine waters have been sited and built to enhance recreational fishing.
To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.
Data were obtained using a variety of methods, including: downloading data from state websites (in a range of formats), data provided directly from state contacts, research into artificial reefs not in any dataset, emails from state contacts or NOAA contacts who talked to states with information about reef status, etc. Where data was available to download, attempts were made to verify this data was the most current using contacts available, and to explain how the data was going to be used. For some states it was confirmed that no artificial reefs exist. In other states, no data was found, and no contacts were available or responsive.
The DepthFromBathymetry value domain is (Y = DEM, N = nautical chart, NULL = original source)

1
1) Creating point representation of all reef features or general reef center.
2) Projecting data into the required coordinate system (EPSG 4269).
3) Standardization of attribution: converting full dates to year only, replacing blank strings with NULL values, removing leading spaces in string attributes, concatenating or splitting attribute fields to better align with desired final data fields, ensuring all missing values/attributes were NULL, parsing out depth ranges to single value, etc. State specific details are noted in the above section.
4) Mapping state data source attribute fields to the agreed upon final data dictionary, which included the following attributes: State abbreviation, reef ID, Name, Composition, Structure, Year, and depth (see provided data dictionary spreadsheet for details).
5) Acquire depth values from NOAA sources, for records with null depths.
6) Adjustments to the format of text in the reefName, reefComposition, and reefStructure fields.
