Abstract: |
Data from the 2010 Decennial Census and the 2012 - 2016 five year estimates from the American Community Survey were joined to TIGER/Line shapefiles of US coastal counties produced by the Census Bureau to produce this visual representation of select census statistics. The Decennial Census is a nation wide survey conducted every tenth year by the U.S. Census Bureau as mandated by U.S. The Constitution for the purpose of establishing an accurate count of the country's population. The results, published at the end of each survey year, are primarily used by the government to allocate funds and apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Until 2000, one in every 6 households received a "long form" of the Decennial Census to collect additional social, housing and economic information, but the long form was discontinued after the 2000 Decennial Census. The continuing need for timely, nationally consistent information on the topics formerly included in the long form lead the Census Bureau to develop the American Community Survey (ACS) in 2005. The ACS is an ongoing survey program which randomly samples about 3.5 million households throughout the year. Data from the ACS is published in several formats each fall. In addition to the fifty States, the Census Bureau treats the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and each of the Island Areas (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) as the statistical equivalents of States for the purpose of data presentation. Similarly, there are also several independent cities in the New England area identified by law which the Census Bureau treats as county equivalents for Census purposed; a subset of these have been included based on their coastal proximity. Some county level data was not reported by the Decennial Census or the ACS in the US territories and therefore does not appear in this product. Additional information about the Decennial Census and the American Community Survey is available at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys.html. |

Data Quality
Accuracy: |
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate. For ACS data: Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error (margin of error was omitted from this product but can be found in the original source data). In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to nonsampling error. The effect of nonsampling error is not represented in these tables. For additional information on the accuracy of ACS data please see https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/tech_docs/accuracy/MultiyearACSAccuracyofData2016.pdf. For Census data: While it is impossible to completely eliminate nonsampling error from an operation as large and complex as the decennial census, the Census Bureau attempts to control the sources of such error during the collection and processing operations. For additional information on decennial census methodology, accuracy and error please consult "2010 Census Demographic Profile Summary File", Chapter 5 - Operational Overview and Accuracy of the Data (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/tech_docs/accuracy/MultiyearACSAccuracyofData2016.pdf). |
---|---|
Horizontal Positional Accuracy: |
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000. |
Completeness Report: |
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness. For ACS data: When information is missing or inconsistent, the Census Bureau logically assigns an acceptable value using the response to a related question or questions. If a logical assignment is not possible, data are filled using a statistical process called allocation, which uses a similar individual or household to provide a donor value. The "Allocated" section is the number of respondents who received an allocated value for a particular subject. |
Conceptual Consistency: |
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean. |
