      <abstract>This layer displays coastal and offshore marine place names. These are general names for areas of the sea as published on the NOAA Nautical Charts. Different marine place names are displayed depending on the scale you are zoomed into on the map. This layer was created by extracting the Natural Features, Sea Area Named Water Areas from all scale bands in the NOAA Electronic Navigation Charts.</abstract>
      <purpose>To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.</purpose>

            <description>• Go to https://encdirect.noaa.gov/ and download Sea_Area_Named_Water_Area_point and Sea_Area_Named_Water_Area for all locations for all 6 scales (Overview, General, Coastal, Approach, Harbor &amp; Berthing) • Import these shapefiles into a new file geodatabase • Merge the point feature classes into a single feature class • Visually scan through the point features and delete any duplicates • For the 6 area feature classes, compare visually between the layers and delete duplicates, keeping the feature that is placed most accurately using the RNC image service http://seamlessrnc.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/arcgis/rest/services/RNC/NOAA_RNC/ImageServer • Merge the remaining features from the 6 area feature classes into a single feature class • Use the Feature to Point tool, checking the Inside option box • Merge this point feature class with the original one • Again visually scan through the point features and delete any duplicates • Fill in the type field for any features missing that attributes • Delete any features that are not actually Marine Place Names • Delete all superfluous fields • Project data into WGS 1984 Auxiliary Sphere</description>
