Tagging, Mux, smolt, habitat and flow data - Movement and Survival of Juvenile Salmonids in Small Streams
Data Set
Planned
This table contains data on fish collected during PIT tagging operations including tagged and untagged fish. Most of the data are from summer electrofishing surveys the data from fall and spring trapping are included in later years.

1
PIT Code
TEXT
No
No
Active
The unique code of the tag that is inserted into the fish. This code is recorded by the MUX unit as the fish is detected at an antenna. Format is alphnumeric, three characters, a period then 10 characters, alpha limited to A-F. Blank if smolt was too small to tag or Mort=Y.
TEXT
2
Date
DATE
No
No
Active
Date stream/reach/habitat was sampled (electrofished). VALUES are 2003 to present.
DATE
3
Season
TEXT
No
No
Active
Time of year sampling took place. Most samples were in Summer (August and September), though in 2005 a few fish were tagged in Fall and Spring. VALUES are Summer, Fall, Winter, or Spring.
TEXT
4
Tag Year
NUMBER
No
No
Active
Year fish were tagged. VALUES are 2003 to present.
NUMBER
5
River
TEXT
No
No
Active
Stream where tagging/sampling took place. VALUES are East Twin, West Twin, Deep Creek.
TEXT
7
Tributary
TEXT
No
No
Active
Indicates whether the sampled East Twin reach was in the mainstem or in Sadie Creek (Major tributary of East Twin). VALUES are Mainstem, Sadie Creek, East Fork, West Fork, Unnamed and blank.
TEXT
8
Reach Point
NUMBER
No
No
Active
Reach Point - every 100 m in all three watersheds was marked by Lower Elwha Tribe from Highway 112 Bridge upstream. 100 m would be 1, 200 = 2 etc.. Most RPs are whole numbers (2, 71, etc.), though they can be more specific (e.g. 4.5, 6.5 etc.). We also identified some reaches and habitat units down to specific meter. For example, RP 8.28 was a reach that started at 828m.
NUMBER
9
Habitat Unit
NUMBER
No
No
Active
NOAA surveys in 2003 to 2008 often were done by sampling each habitat unit separately and the habitat unit sampled within that reach was identified. This is 0 for all Weyco surveys and NOAA surveys from 2009 onward, as Weyco samples entire reach using 1 or 3 pass electrofishing, and starting in 2009 NOAA surveys used same protocol as Weyco. VALUES are integers 0 to 24.
NUMBER
10
Passes
TEXT
No
No
Active
Number of electrofishing passes. Null means not electofished (smolt trap). VALUES are 0,1,2,3,4,5, blank. 0 or blank means they did not record number of passes.
TEXT
11
Standardized Species
TEXT
No
No
Active
Species are standardized on RBT(rainbow/steelhead), TF(trout fry), CO (coho), CT (cutthroat), STH (steelhead), SC=sculpin, CRAY=crayfish, LMP = lamprey, etc., ASTR - tailed frogs (Ascaphus truei). (Other values not yet corrected 1/24/2014).
TEXT
12
Species
TEXT
No
No
Active
Species, particularly for trout, was not consistently identified in earlier years (~2003 to 2007). This is the original field call, though likely was already cleaned up a little in data sheets before being standardized.
TEXT
13
Fork Length
NUMBER
No
No
Active
The fork length of the each fish measured to nearest millimeter. Non salmonids are often only counted, but not measured so fork lengths are usually missing for SC, LMP, etc. VALUES are >10mm and <650 mm.
NUMBER
14
Fork Length Source
TEXT
No
No
Active
In a few instances (Particularly prior to ~2007) length of a fish was not measured or there was an error, the length was then either estimated from the weight using a length weight equation or based on average weight of same size fish in habitat. Typically sculpin (SC) and crayfish (CRAY) are not measured so there will be a blank for many of these species. VALUES are """"blank"""", measured, or estimated.
TEXT
15
Weight
NUMBER
No
No
Active
Weight is measured to the nearest tenth of gram. If it is not measured, we estimate using weight-length formula developed for each species (CO, RBT, TR).
NUMBER
16
Weight Source
TEXT
No
No
Active
Indicates whether weight was measured or estimated from formula. VALUES are """"blank"""", measured, or estimated.
TEXT
17
Time
TEXT
No
No
Active
Time stamp from PIT tag """"brick"""" indicating when fish was tagged. VALUES are time to nearest second.
TEXT
18
Recaptured
TEXT
No
No
Active
Indicates whether this fish was a recapture from previous tagging. VALUES are Y, recapture, or N, not a recapture.
TEXT
19
Mortality
TEXT
No
No
Active
Y indicates fish died during sampling before it was released. N, it lived through release.
TEXT
20
Notes
TEXT
No
No
Active
Any notes about fish of site that might be relevant, may also be notes from when database was cleaned up.
TEXT
21
Year River Reach Habitat Unit
TEXT
No
No
Active
This was originally a concatenated field that denotes year, river and RP and habitat unit (reach point) to help match up with the habitat data table. It is not totally unique. VALUES are alphanumeric combination of Year, River, RP, Habitat Unit #. Retained for historical reasons.
TEXT
22
Size Category
TEXT
No
No
Active
Size category derived from fork length (fl). When fork length < 86, then Age 0, else Age 1+.
TEXT
23
Fish ID
NUMBER
No
No
Active
Unique fish id number, intended to correspond to order in original excel data sheet.
NUMBER
24
Not Tagged
TEXT
No
No
Active
This button was added to our field computer so if we came across a fish that was too weak or injured to tag, I could just press the 'no tag' button and not take the time to write out the reason why.
