Abstract:

This dataset contains baseline hardened shoreline classification vector feature datasets for the United States Great Lakes shoreline.

Purpose:

The data was created for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office for Coastal Management, and in partnership with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, to support detailed shoreline mapping and will be of value in supporting future work on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the State of the Great Lakes Reports, Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and other geospatial analyses.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Quality Control processes included visual inspection of shoreline geometry and classification. To help ensure consistency between shoreline geometries and to aide temporal analyses, pre-existing shoreline datasets were used to compare the extent of digitization of the new shorelines. Inspection of shoreline accuracy was completed by analysts who did not digitize the original shoreline. This secondary inspection was completed at scales equal to or larger than those used during digitization. To assess classification accuracy, shoreline classification reaches were randomly selected and inspected. The classification inspections were completed by scientists with local expertise in Great Lakes shorelines and proven aerial image interpretation experience. High resolution, oblique, imagery provided sufficient information to determine shoreline and structural types along most of the shoreline.
