1. General Description of Data to be Managed

1.1. Name of the Data, data collection Project, or data-producing Program:
Temperature and Current Instrument Data in the Coral Nursery with the Saipan Coral Nursery Pilot Project (SCNPP) in the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) since 2019
1.2. Summary description of the data:

Water temperature and current time series data provided in this data set are from a Lowell Instruments TCM-1 Current Meter deployed at the Saipan Coral Nursery Pilot Project (SCNPP) site in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). The temperature and current instrument recorders were deployed for a period of <1 year, from June of 2019 - February 2020 and were re-deployed again for a period of <1 year from April of 2020 - June of 2020, and have been redeployed since then. The data is a part of an ongoing timeseries and updated entries are expected annually. Data are downloaded and converted using the proprietary MAT_LOGGER drive and MAT Logger Commander also provided by Lowell Instruments.

The Current data described here includes: local date and time, speed (cm/s), Bearing (degrees), Velocity-N (cm/s) and Velocity-E (cm/s). The current sample interval over time stays consistently at 1 minute intervals.

The Temperature data described here includes local date and time and temperature (c). The temperature sample interval over time ranges from 1 - 2 minutes.

5. Data Lineage and Quality

NOAA has issued Information Quality Guidelines for ensuring and maximizing the quality, objectivity, utility, and integrity of information which it disseminates.

5.1. Processing workflow of the data from collection or acquisition to making it publicly accessible
(describe or provide URL of description):

Lineage Statement:
The deployment, recovery and process steps of temperature and current data from the 'Lowell Instruments TCM-1 Current Meter' employed by the Saipan Coral Nursery Pilot Project team since 2019.

Process Steps:

  • Instrument Deployment and Recovery The TCM-1 Current Meter instrument is buoyant and is secured by a flexible tether to a cinder block, taken by small boat to the deployment location and is installed by SCUBA divers. The instrument is recovered by SCUBA divers retrieving it from it's deployment location, removing the secured cinder block and bringing the instrument back to the office to download the data onto a drive. After the data from the instrument is downloaded, the instrument batteries are switched out, the instrument is cleaned up, checked that all components are functioning correctly, and re-deployed in the same manner described above.
  • Time Series Data Processing Data are downloaded and converted using the proprietary MAT_LOGGER drive and MAT Logger Commander also provided by Lowell Instruments.
5.1.1. If data at different stages of the workflow, or products derived from these data, are subject to a separate data management plan, provide reference to other plan:
Always left blank
5.2. Quality control procedures employed
(describe or provide URL of description):

Quality control is conducted after the instrument is retrieved and the data is downloaded from the instrument, when the data is processed and analyzed and when the data is packaged and submitted to the NOAA archive.

6. Data Documentation

The EDMC Data Documentation Procedural Directive requires that NOAA data be well documented, specifies the use of ISO 19115 and related standards for documentation of new data, and provides links to resources and tools for metadata creation and validation.

6.1. Does metadata comply with EDMC Data Documentation directive?
No
Notes: All required DMP fields must be populated and valid to comply with the directive.
