Cetacean visual observations using line-transect survey methods, and environmental parameters collected by CTD and other instruments onboard the NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter (GU) in the Gulf of Mexico, during the Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species (GoMMAPPS survey GU1703) from 2017-07-03 to 2017-08-23 (NCEI Accession 0243654). [indicate subset used]. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Unpublished Dataset. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/archive/accession/0243654. Accessed [date].
As part of the Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species (GoMMAPPS), the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) conducted aerial surveys of the U.S. continental shelf waters (up to the 200-m isobath) in the Gulf of Mexico from 6/29/2017 to 8/17/2017. The survey was designed for a two-team independent visual observer approach with distance sampling to estimate abundance and characterize spatial distribution of marine mammals and sea turtles. This dataset includes marine mammal and sea turtle visual observation data and effort points with surveying conditions that can be used in abundance and density modeling per visual line-transect survey protocols. This dataset also includes marine mammal photographs used to aid in species identification.
To collect data on the distribution and abundance of marine mammals in the U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) using two independent visual survey teams.

trackline points were plotted to identify errors made when recording effort status
Parameter or Variable: cetacean (measured); Units: NA; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Ships; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The goal of the research was to conduct line-transect surveys using the Distance sampling approach to estimate the abundance and spatial distribution of marine mammals in the oceanic waters of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. A two-team independent observer approach using pedestal-mounted 25x150 mm “big eye” binoculars was used to correct for perception bias in resulting abundance estimates. Survey tracklines were oriented perpendicular to bathymetry lines and followed a “sawtooth” pattern from approximately the 100m-isobath to the Exclusive Economic Zone.; Data Quality Method: Data auditing consisted of making corrections based on error log notes from the field, plotting trackline points to identify errors made when recording effort status, and verifying sighting data based on data sheets from the field..

Parameter or Variable: Ocean temperature (measured); Units: degrees C; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Environmental data were collected at predetermined stations using a conductivity, temperature and depth sensor (CTD) unit. CTD casts recorded vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, and oxygen content to a maximum depth of 500 m. CTD casts were made daily, typically at the end of the mammal survey day..

NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter
The Gordon Gunter primarily serves the NMFS Pascagoula Laboratory in Mississippi. The Gordon Gunter is a 224-ft. multi-use platform. It is equipped with a thermosalinograph, CTD, fluorometer, and other oceanographic instruments that monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions while traveling. A variety of research gears are deployed from the vessel including stern trawling, longlining, plankton tows, and dredging. The Gordon Gunter operates in all three SEFSC research areas.
