To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act. |

1) State geometry data was acquired by URL from the U.S. Census TIGER/Line database for U.S., States and Equivalent Entities. 2020 data was used, as it is current with the 2020 American Community Survey 5-year estimate. Coastal states, defined as US states and equivalent territorial units which have at least one coastal border, were selected. Validation tests for geometry and topology were conducted. 2) Summary tables from the 2020 American Community Survey 5-year estimate were acquired by URL as comma-delimited (*.csv) documents, any superfluous attributes were eliminated, and tables were joined to the appropriate state geometry using the stateFIPS code field common to both the summary tables and TIGER/Line geometry. 3) Summary tables for American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were collected from the 2020 Decennial Census (Total population and total housing units), and the 2010 Decennial Census (median household income), and joined to the TIGER/Line state geometry. American Community Survey values are not included in the Island Areas. |
