dataset
Accuracy
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000.
Completeness Report
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness.
Conceptual Consistency
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean.
(1) Data opened in Python and the following Columns were extracted (over 114 columns available containing a variety of data to choose from, see: https://ecowatch.ncddc.noaa.gov/erddap/info/deep_sea_corals/index.html Columns Extracted: "Flag", "FlagReason", "VernacularNameCategory", "TaxonRank", "ScientificName", "Latitude", "Longitude", "ObservationDate", "ObservationYear", "DepthInMeters", "DepthMethod", "LocationAccuracy", "SamplingEquipment", "DataProvider" (2) All rows that were “Flagged” were removed – in most cases there was missing data or uncertainty about that particular record. (3) Any data that did not have an ObservationYear were removed (Most of this was removed when the flagged columns were removed, but a few -999 were present and removed) (4) New Field / Column added “SimplifiedCategory”, which contains classifications – to reduce number of categories for display. Rows that had NULL for ‘VernacularNameCategory’ were deleted VernacularNameCategory Simplified Category stony coral (cup coral) Stony Coral stony coral (branching) Stony Coral stony coral (unspecified) Stony Coral black coral black coral gold coral gold coral gorgonian coral gorgonian coral soft coral soft coral sea pen sea pen lace coral lace coral stoloniferan coral stoloniferan coral lithotelestid coral lithotelestid coral longhorn hydrozoan coral Hydrozoan other coral-like hydrozoan Hydrozoan sponge (unspecified) Sponge glass sponge Sponge demosponge Sponge calcareous sponge Sponge homoscleromorph sponge Sponge (5) ObservationDate was dismantled into ObservationMonth, ObservationDay, and converted from text to integers. The reason for this is that Excel has issues storing dates prior to 1900, hence the need to store Day, Month, and Year into separate columns (6) -999 replaced with NULL for DepthInMeters (7) The Flag, Flag Reason, Observation Date columns were deleted and no longer relevant (8) Data extracted by Economic Exclusion Zone boundary and then Projected from WGS 1984 GCS to WGS 1984 World Mercator
