* » Abstract

Essential Fish Habitat means those waters and substrate necessary to fish for spawning, breeding, feeding, or growth to maturity. Waters include aquatic areas and their associated physical, chemical, and biological properties that are used by fish and may include aquatic areas historically used by fish where appropriate. Substrate includes sediment, hard bottom, structures underlying the waters, and associated biological communities. Necessary means the habitat required to support a sustainable fishery and the managed species' contribution to a healthy ecosystem. Highly migratory species managed by NOAA Fisheries include tunas, some sharks, swordfish, billfish, and other highly sought-after fish such as Pacific mahi mahi.
* Purpose

To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.

(1) The Nationwide Shapefile (Latest data update: 03/14/2018) was downloaded

(2) The Atlantic Highly Migratory Species (AHMS) and Pacific Highly Migratory Species (PHMS) were selected and exported out

(3) The LTTD_Link and LTTDT_LINK field were deleted as the links were broken

(4) The LTTD_Title field was deleted as this provided no useful information

(5) ZONE, INSTATEWAT, ACRES were all deleted

(6) The ZoomLevel field was deleted as this provided no usable information

(7) The CentroidLa and CentroidLo were both deleted as this information is not needed

(8) The Region field was deleted as this was redundant with the FMC (Fisheries Management Council) field

(9) The DDBOX and LTTD_TIT_1 fields were both deleted as these were both identical to the SITENAME_L field

(10) The DATACAVEAT field was deleted as this was only present for the Pacific HMS and was incomplete

(11) TYPE field deleted as the only value was “EFH” – since the layer is the EFH for HMS it is not necessary

(12) “Area_km2” added and Area calculation performed in WGS 1984 World Mercator performed to provide more accurate measurements

(13) SITENAME_L renamed to EFH_HMS
