This dataset represents monthly and annual averages of percentage light reaching at 1 m depth relative to surface light (KdPAR). The units are in percentage (%) as surface light reaching at 1 m depth derived from raw dataset. Wave band is 400-700 nm or Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). Raw data available monthly from Jan 1, 2010, to Dec 31, 2017, with a spatial resolution of 4 km x 4 km. The monthly and annual means are summarized for the time period 2010-2017. Data provided by NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). Raw dataset collected by NASA satellite SUOMI National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS). Citation: SeungHyun Son, Menghua Wang., 2015: Diffuse attenuation coefficient of the photosynthetically available radiation Kd(PAR) for global open ocean and coastal waters. Remote Sensing of Environment, Volume 159, 15 March 2015, Pages 250-258.
To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.

Accuracy
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000.
Completeness Report
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness.
Conceptual Consistency
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean.
(1) To process the data, satellite water-leaving radiance (an atmospherically corrected quantity) is calculated, and then Kd490 calculated from water-leaving radiance. (2) KdPAR generated from Kd490 using a conversion equation for clear and turbid waters separately using weighting scheme. (3) Daily composites calculated from hourly datasets (750 m spatial resolution). (4) The daily composite averages re-binned into 4 km-grid daily composites. The 4 km daily composites binned into monthly composite averages. (5) KdPAR values used to calculate light the bottom seafloor using solar irradiance. (6) Radiance at 1m depth calculated. (7) Ratio of radiance at 1 m and solar radiance (corrected) provide percentage light reaching at 1 m depth. (8) Data filtered using low pass filter to filter out outliers. (9) Data clipped to remove 'no data' regions or data artifacts. Data also clipped to U.S. EEZ boundary. (10) Data projected to WGS 1984 World Mercator (WKID: 3395).
