These data depict the occurrence of submarine cables in and around U.S. navigable waters. The purpose of this data product is to support coastal planning at the regional and national scale. These data are derived from NOAA and NASCA Submarine Cable records. Cables segments logically assumed to be parts of a single cable have been combined into a single feature in this dataset. However, in an effort to retain as much information as possible, in instances where such segments had slight differences in attribution the segments were not combined.
To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.

The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate.
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000.
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness.
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean.

Combine segments of cables that have the same attribution into a continuous line: Create a New File for source code String_Joiner.R and Flex_String_Joiner.R and open Flexible_Line_Merge.R and paste the file paths for the two source codes within source("File path here"). Export cables layer from .gdb to .shp, if not already done so, into a new folder named SubCablesInput_[date] and create folder another new folder named SubCablesOutput_[date]. Open R Studio and fill in line_rectifier input.shape="local file path\\SubCablesInput_[date].shp", and output.shape="local filepath\\SubCablesOutput_[date].shp". Dissolve the output shape by all attributes excluding FID, ObjectID, shape_leng, FeatID, and Nfeat. Populate Flex Line Rectifier with input.shape="Your Dissolve output.shp" and output.shape="SubCables_ForQC_[date].shp" Run through Flex_line_rectifier with a degree flexibility between 0-2. Dissolve again by the same attributes from line rectifier and begin QC making sure all attributes are the same for cables that are in a continuous line with no gaps. Do not merge cables with the same attributes that come to a three-way intersection
