Hawaii Small Boat Cost-Earnings Data: 2020

These data represent a cost-earnings study of the Hawaii small boat fishery conducted in 2021. Data collected include fishing motivation, vessel characteristics, fixed costs, trip-level expenditures, fishing behavior, market participation, social aspects of the fishery, and demographics of small boat fishermen in 2020.

The purpose of the cost-earnings study was to update our understanding of the economic and social characteristics of the Hawaii small boat fishery. Collection of these baseline data provides managers with an updated understanding of potential behavioral responses and impacts from future fishing regulations.

A total of 345 surveys were completed across the State of Hawaii

After the data were recorded through mail data collection methods (paper), data were entered into Excel, and merged with the online survey data in Excel. The data were subject to logic tests and appropriate skip patterns. The data were assessed for outliers and cleaned. Finally, the cleaned data were used to generate data reports and summaries.

These data are Sensitive (business information). Efforts to disseminate can be arranged upon request, but the data are currently out of scope for the Data directive.

Data is securely stored in PIFSC's server with password protection.
