VA_HamptonRoads_1 (Work Unit 300645)
The Virginia Hampton Roads, Work Unit 300645 Lidar project (Virginia AOI) called for the Planning, Acquisition, processing and derivative products of lidar data to be collected at a nominal point density of 0.35 points per square meter for QL1 data. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base Lidar Specification 2022, revision A. The data was developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83 (2011), VA State Plane South, US feet, and vertical datum of NAVD88 (GEOID 18), feet. Lidar data was delivered as processed Classified LAS 1.4 files, formatted to 70 individual 1000 m x 1000 m tiles and as tiled bare earth DEMs; all tiled to the same 1000 m x 1000 m schema. A 2 foot cell size Digital Elevation Model (DEM) raster was created from the ground classified lidar points. The files are delivered in tile format (2500ft by 2500ft), the rasters are delivered in 32-bit floating point GeoTIFF format (.tif) and adhere to USGS-NGP Lidar Base Specification 2024, rev. A. The Virginia Hampton Roads work unit 300645 is approximately 2,266 square miles and has 10,688 tiles.

The Virginia Hampton Roads, Work Unit 300653 Lidar project (North Carolina AOI) called for the Planning, Acquisition, processing and derivative products of lidar data to be collected at a nominal point density of 0.35 points per square meter for QL1 data. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base Lidar Specification 2022, revision A. The data was developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83 (2011), UTM Zone 18N, Meters, and vertical datum of NAVD88 (GEOID 18), Meters. Lidar data was delivered as processed Classified LAS 1.4 files, formatted to individual 1000 m x 1000 m tiles and as tiled bare earth DEMs; all tiled to the same 1000 m x 1000 m schema. A 0.5 meter cell size Digital Elevation Model (DEM) raster was created from the ground classified lidar points. The files are delivered in tile format (1000m x 1000m), the rasters are delivered in 32-bit floating point GeoTIFF format (.tif). The Virginia Hampton Roads work unit 300653 is approximately 21 square miles and has 70 tiles.
Ground Conditions: Lidar was collected in the spring 2024, while no snow was on the ground.
This metadata record supports the data entry in the NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). For this data set, the DAV is leveraging the GeoTIFF files hosted by USGS on Amazon Web Services.
This task is for providing a Winter/Spring 2024 leaf-off and snow-free lidar survey over an area of approximately 2,287 square miles. This project will support the 3DEP mission, the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
