Abstract

The Digital Elevation Model dataset consists of tiled LiDAR DEM Images. Each file contains a Raster Image of the Digital Elevation Model. The Geographical Extent of this dataset extends to the entirety of the SC_Northern_1_D24 UTM Zone 17N boundary, approximately 2760 square miles, covering the following counties: Cherokee, Chester, Fairfield (partial), Lancaster (partial), Union, York.

This metadata record supports the data entry in the NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). For this data set, the DAV is leveraging the GeoTIFF files hosted by USGS on Amazon Web Services.

Purpose

The USGS and NRCS contracted Digital Aerial Solutions, LLC to obtain professional services related to the planning, acquisition and development of Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) data and derivative products. The task order is for a QL1 LiDAR survey to be collected over northern South Carolina. The deliverable products would be used to support the State of South Carolina, and the 3DEP mission.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

This data set was produced to meet ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data (2023) for a 36.0 (cm) RMSEx / RMSEy Horizontal Accuracy Class which equates to Positional Horizontal Accuracy =+/- 50.2 cm at a 95% confidence level.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

This data set was produced to meet ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standard for Digital Geospatial Data (2024) for a 10-cm RMSEz Vertical Accuracy Class.

USGS Determined DEM Vertical Accuracy:

Non-Vegetated Vertical Accuracy (NVA) = 4.99 cm RMSE

Vegetated Vertical Accuracy (VVA) = 18 cm at the 95th Percentile

Please refer to the USGS Project Report in the URL section of this metadata record.

Completeness Report:

The RAW LAS data files included all data points collected. No points have been removed or excluded. A visual qualitative assessment was performed to ensure data completeness. No void areas or missing data exist. The RAW point cloud is of good quality and data passes Fundamental Vertical Accuracy specifications. Void areas (i.e., areas outside the project boundary but within the tiling scheme) are coded using a unique NODATA value. This value is identified in the appropriate location within the file header.

Conceptual Consistency:

Aerial LiDAR data covers the entire 2760 square miless Area of Interest intended for this project. All LiDAR Point Cloud tiles show no edge artifacts or mismatches from tile to tile. Void areas (i.e., areas outside the project boundary but within the tiling scheme) are coded using a unique NODATA value. This value is identified in the appropriate location within the file header. Data cover the entire area specified for this project.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) ingested references to the USGS GeoTIFF files that are hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), into the Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). The DAV accesses the raster data as it resides on AWS.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1474927
Description:

Bare-Earth DEM Creation: Bare-Earth Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are created using TIN surface method in LP360 with the hydro break line and bare-earth (ground) LiDAR points, all DEMs were created with a grid spacing of 0.5 Meters. The DEMs were cut to tiles of 1,000 Meters X 1,000 Meters index, provided by the US Geological Survey.

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1474968
Description:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) created references to the USGS GeoTIFF files that were ingested into the NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). No changes were made to the data. The DAV will access the raster data as it resides on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
