Abstract

A two-foot (2ft) cell size Digital Elevation Model raster was created from the ground classified LIDAR points plus the breaklines. The files are delivered in 2000ft by 2000ft tile format, The rasters are delivered in GeoTIFF .tif format. Base Specification 2021 rev. A with a Aggregate Nominal Point Spacing (ANPS) of 0.5m or less.

This dataset covers approximately 9013 square miles in north central Illinois and consists of 4 deliveries or blocks.

IL_MidNorth_1 (Work Unit 229055) - Approximately 3410 square miles, including Fulton (partial), Henderson, Knox (partial), McDonough, Mercer, and Warren counties

IL_MidNorth_2 (Work Unit 300135) - Approximately 3161 square miles, including Fulton (partial), Knox (partial), Marshall, Peoria, Putnam, Stark, Tazewell, and Woodford counties

IL_MidNorth_3 (Work Unit 300136) - Approximately 2126 square miles, including DeWitt, McLean, and Platt counties

IL_MidNorth_4 (Work Unit 300137) - Approximately 369 square miles, including DuPage county

This metadata record supports the data entry in the NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). For this data set, the DAV is leveraging the GeoTIFF files hosted by USGS on Amazon Web Services.

Purpose

This task is for providing a spring 2022 leaf-off and snow-free lidar survey over an Area of Interest (AOI) of approximately 9,013 square miles in central and northeastern Illinois. This Task Order will support the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) agricultural resource mapping and soil survey programs, and the 3DEP mission. The following will describe the proposed services and associated revised costs to successfully complete the mission.

Data Access & Downloads

  • Create custom data files by choosing data area, map projection, file format, etc. A new metadata will be produced to reflect your request using this record as a base.

  • GeoTIFF

Bulk download of data files in GeoTIFF format, Illinois State Plane (East or West) NAD83(2011), US survey feet coordinates and NAVD88 (Geoid18) elevations in US survey feet.

Access Constraints:

A dataset in EPT will contain a lot of files, however, the ept.json file describes all the rest. The EPT file can be used in Potree and QGIS to view the point cloud.

Entwine Point Tile (EPT) is a simple and flexible octree-based storage format for point cloud data. The data is organized in such a way that the data can be reasonably streamed over the internet, pulling only the points you need. EPT files can be queried to return a subset of the points that give you a representation of the area. As you zoom further in, you are requesting higher and higher densities. A dataset in EPT will contain a lot of files, however, the ept.json file describes all the rest. The EPT file can be used in Potree and QGIS to view the point cloud.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

The lidar data set was produced to meet ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data (2014) for a 30 (cm) RMSEx / RMSEy Horizontal Accuracy Class which equates to Positional Horizontal Accuracy = +/- 73.4 cm at a 95% confidence level.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

This data set was produced to meet ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standard for Digital Geospatial Data (2014) for a 10-cm RMSEz Vertical Accuracy Class.

USGS Determined DEM Vertical Accuracy:

Non-Vegetated Vertical Accuracy (NVA) = 4.92 cm RMSE

Vegetated Vertical Accuracy (VVA) = 19.26 cm at 95th Percentile

Completeness Report:

The dataset was reviewed to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Conceptual Consistency:

Data covers the entire area specified for this project.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1485063
Description:

LIDAR data was collected using the Optech Galaxy sensor. The raw data was verified in MARS software for complete coverage of the project area, and boresighted to align the flightlines. Raw data files were parsed into manageable client-specific tiles. These tiles were then processed through automated filtering that separates the data into different classification groups: unclassified points, ground points, low veg [0.5-5 feet], medium veg [5-20 feet], high veg [>20 feet], automated buildings, low noise, water, bridge decks, high noise and ignore ground (breakline proximity). The data was next taken into MARS to reclassify the erroneous points that may remain in the LIDAR point cloud after auto filter. Four points or greater per square meter (QL2+) ASPRS ver 1.4 format.

Process Date/Time: 2022-12-28 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1485064
Description:

LiDAR swath data was measured to have an aggregate of 0.349 meter nominal pulse spacing and 8.224 pulses per meter. The method used was counting first return points within the each swath then dividing by the area of the extent of the corresponding swath to get density. NPS was mathematically derived from this density number. This was performed on each swath then averaged to generate the two numbers above. This USGS method does not consider swath sidelap in these calculations.

Process Date/Time: 2022-12-28 00:00:00

Process Step 3

CC ID: 1485065
Description:

Using MARS software a two-foot (2ft) DEM GeoTIFF .tif file was created using the ground classified lidar points along with the breaklines. The files are delivered in 2000ft by 2000ft tiles.

Process Step 4

CC ID: 1485066
Description:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) created references to the USGS GeoTIFF files that were ingested into the NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer (DAV). No changes were made to the data. The DAV will access the raster data as it resides on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
