Salt marsh habitats along the shoreline of Halls Lake are threatened by wave erosion, but the reconstruction of barrier islands to reduce this erosion will modify or destroy nonvegetated habitats in West Bay. Twenty-four 1.8-m diameter drop samples were taken in and around Halls Lake in West Galveston Bay during May, 1990 on daylight flood tides to provide information on the relative value of estuarine habitats for fishery species. Over 3,000 fish, shrimp, and crabs were collected from about 39 taxa. In conjunction with other published data on habitat value in Galveston Bay, our results indicate that for most crustacean, the Halls Lake marshes are more valuable than the other habitats examined. The relative value of the habitats for fishes was highly species-dependent. A survey of the West Bay shoreline indicated that valuable salt marsh habitats could be established on created barrier islands if direction of exposure and shoreline slope were controlled.
Identify and describe the relationship between fishery productivity and the coastal environment.

Table contains count, measurement, and weight information, if available, for penaeid shrimp only. If count = 0, a code of '-999' in measurement column indicates nothing to measure or weigh for given record or sample. If count =1, a code of '-999' in measurement column indicates damaged specimens that could not be measured for given taxon. An empty column indicates parameter was not measured. No biomass data for Hall's Lake penaeids. All penaeid counts must be divided by 2.6 to calculate number per meter squared values because larger 1.8-m drop trap used sampled an area of 2.6 m2.

Each sample was assigned a unique identification code. Field samples were tagged redundantly (e.g. one label inside collection container and a matching label attached to the outside of container). The sample identifier and associated information (e.g. date, location, habitat) were recorded on field data sheets. Once a sample arrived at the laboratory, the label remained with the sample throughout the various stages of sample processing. After field data were entered into an Excel spreadsheet or similar database file, the information was printed out and compared against the field data sheets by two biologists. Corrections were made at this time and saved. The electronic file was also sorted and examined by the Lab Supervisor or other project personnel in a variety of ways to look for outliers, missing data, and other potential errors.

After sample collection, field data were entered into an Excel spreadsheet or database file (DBF) using database manager software. A text file was created to describe these data and associated variables. Entered data were checked against the field sheets by two biologists to minimize entry errors. Samples were processed in the laboratory, sorted, specimens identified and measured, and information was entered into an Excel spreadsheet or DBF file. Files were printed out and compared against original data sheets by two biologists for data entry errors. Corrections were made at this time, the electronic file was saved, and a back-up copy made. Hard copies of the QCd files were printed and stored in the project folder along with the original field and laboratory data sheets. The electronic file was also sorted and examined by the Lab Supervisor or other project personnel in a variety of ways to look for outliers, missing data, and other potential errors. Verified data files were then saved electronically on the Galveston Laboratory server and backed-up as needed.
