Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are a navigation safety device that transmits and monitors the location and characteristics of many vessels in U.S. and international waters in real-time. In the U.S. the Coast Guard and industry collect AIS data, which can also be used for a variety of coastal planning purposes. NOAA and BOEM have worked jointly to re-task and make available some of the most important records from the U.S. Coast Guard's national network of AIS receivers. Information such as location, time, ship type, length, width, and draft have been extracted from the raw data and prepared as track lines for analyses in desktop GIS software.
To support coastal and ocean planning and other activities pursuant to the Energy Policy Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Rivers and Harbors Act and the Submerged Lands Act.

dataset
Accuracy
The attributes in this dataset are believed to be accurate.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy
Maximum scale of intended use is 1:80,000.
Completeness Report
Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete, although attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No tests have been completed for exhaustiveness.
Conceptual Consistency
These data are believed to be logically consistent. Geometry is topologically clean.
1 Filter of raw NMEA data to a one minute sample rate using MarineCadastre.gov AIS utilities
2 Conversion of NMEA records into file geodatabase format using MarineCadastre.gov AIS utilities
3 General quality, consistency and completeness check using ArcGIS SUMMARY commands
4 MERGE broadcast feature class and vessel/voyage tables by month for the Gulf of Mexico (UTM zones 14, 15, 16)into separate File Geodatabase for Gulf of Mexico ocean basin
5 Development of monthly polyline features using MarineCadastre Track Builder 2.1 (64-bit version) for each month of broadcast records with a filter setting of 30 minutes and 1 nautical mile, with voyage/vessel table joins
6 MERGE of all monthly track line feature classes into annual datasets for each ocean basin
7 Drop fields for IMO, Call Sign, Name, Destination, Cargo, StartTime, EndTime, ETA, VoyageID, and DimensionComponents
8 Removed track line features within selected UTM zones that were outside of each ocean basin
9 REPAIR GEOMETRY to remove features with null geometry
10 Define, insert and populate the DurationMinutes field using track start and end times
11 Define, insert and populate the VesselGroup field using VesselType values
12 Manual edits in ArcMap to remove track line records originating from AIS transmitters in transit on U.S Highways or at other upland locations based on visual assessments at a scale of 1:1,000,000
13 Conversion of draught values from 1/10th meter units to meter units
2015-07-10T00:00:00
1. Download all 2013 data processed by ASA. 2. Remove superfluous fields. 3. Project into NAD83. 4. Create layer file. 5. Create and validate metadata. 6. Create data download.
