Benthic habitat polygon coverages are being created for the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS). ROV, towed camera sled, bathymetry data, sedimentary samples, and sonar mapping have been integrated to describe the geological, biological, and oceanographic aspects of habitat. OCNMS has collected side scan sonar, multibeam bathymetry, bottom grab and video data to produce polygon coverages describing the benthic habitat for survey HMPR-114-2004-02b. The habitat polygons have attributes for megahabitat, bottom induration, mesohabitat, macrohabitat and biology (where direct observations are available),polygon area and perimeter.
These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) software to display benthic information.

Mesohabitat and macrohabitat observations are missing where video or still frame observations are lacking.
Polygon topology present. Each polygon has a label and all polygons are closed.

Geotiff images were converted to raw binary files and processed according to: Cochrane, G.R., and K.D. Lafferty, 2002. Use of acoustic classification of side scan sonar data for mapping benthic habitat in the Northern Channel Islands, California. Continental Shelf Research. 22: 683-690.The cited Texture procedure was carried out on the sonar mosaic. After misclassified data was edited, the mosaic was imported into Leica Geosystems Imagine software where grey scale values were reclassified. Images were exported back to an geotiff format. The Majority Filter command in ArcInfo (with Eight|Half parameters) was run on the image to reduce the number of polygons features, essentially smoothing the data through a neighborhood analysis. The raster image was then converted to polygon features in ArcInfo. Sediment grab data and video information were used as a validation tool. Where video data existed, polygons were manually split to attach macrohabitat attributes.
