Northeast Student Annual Highlights
Each year Northeast Fisheries Science Center laboratories welcome students in a variety of programs tailored to their interests and the NOAA Fisheries mission.
In 2023, more than 50 students spent time learning from and working with mentors at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center. Most are undergraduates, but there are also opportunities for post-graduate students. Some are recruited through national-level programs and others through regional efforts. These are mostly summer opportunities, but a few are available at other times of the year. All are focused on hands-on science and encouraging talented young people from all types of educational institutions to consider a career in marine science.
Woods Hole Partnership Education Program
The Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP) is a multi-institutional program supported by six Woods Hole, Massachusetts scientific institutions and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The 10–week program is designed primarily for college juniors and seniors from underrepresented groups in marine and ocean sciences who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science. Most of the students are new to the program, but this year a few are PEP alumni returning for more advanced work. The program consists of a four-week course in global climate change and a ten-week research project, all in the seaside village of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Contact: George Liles.

IN FISH
Started in 2021, IN FISH is a 10-week paid undergraduate internship program that allows students to intern at a NOAA marine research lab or marine resources program office. The 2024l IN FISH class will run from June 3 through August 9. It consists of a two–week workshop course available for credit through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and eight weeks of project experience. A $5,000 stipend is provided to each participant, with tuition and course supplies also covered. Contact: George Liles.

NOAA-Wide Student Programs
Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI)
The primary long-term goal of EPP/MSI is to increase the number of students, particularly from underrepresented communities, who attend higher education institutions that have NOAA Cooperative Science Centers. Each Cooperative Science Center is led by an MSI and partnered with a NOAA line office. The focus is on students who will graduate with degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or natural resource management/policy.

NOAA EPP/MSI Experiential Research & Training Opportunity (NERTO)
The Experiential Research & Training Opportunity is a win-win for NOAA and its MSI Cooperative Science Center academic partners. These opportunities allow CSC-supported students to participate in research and training at a NOAA facility and earn NOAA mission-aligned postsecondary degrees.
Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Established in 2005, the Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for 2 years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

NOAA College-Supported Internship Program
Since 2006, has partnered with selected colleges to provide undergraduate students college-funded summer internship opportunities. Students are enrolled in one of the partner colleges and participate and apply through that college. NOAA provides students experience in science, policy, and science communication.
