Jefferson Hinke, Ph.D.

Program Lead, Seabird Research

Jefferson Hinke is an Ecologist for the Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division. He earned Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC – San Diego in 2012, having joined NOAA Fisheries in 2009. He studies the ecology of Pygoscelis penguins and their interactions with fisheries, changing food webs, climate, and other environmental stressors that affect the marine ecosystem in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Jefferson leads seabird research at two Antarctic field camps and participates annually in Antarctic field research. His research is used to provide scientific advice for U.S. policy on fisheries and spatial management efforts in the Southern Ocean.
