Richard W. Zabel, Ph.D.

Background

Rich Zabel joined the NWFSC in 1999. He received a B.S. and an M.S. in botany from the University of Michigan. He received a Ph.D. in quantitative ecology and resource management from the University of Washington.

Current Research

Rich researches survival processes and behavioral ecology of salmon populations. His primary responsibilities include developing models of population dynamics, spatial and temporal movement patterns, and survival and selection processes. He is particularly interested in placing observed behavior into the context of life history variability, both within and among populations and species. Rich is also involved with the ecosystem management group, which is conducting research on marine protected areas and balancing single-species with ecosystem management.
