2015 Northern Fur Seal Adult Male Counts on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska

Adult male northern fur seal count

Adult male northern fur seals on St. Paul and St. George Islands (Table 1) were counted over the period July 9 to 15, 2015. Counts of territorial males with females (class 3, "harem" males) on St. George Island increased by 12.9% compared to 2014. Idle males (classes 2 and 5) on St. George Island decreased in comparison to 2014 by 37.9%. On St. Paul Island the "harem" males decreased by less than 1.0% and the idle males increased by 4.9% (Figure 2). Overall, the total number of adult males counted on the Pribilof Islands in 2015 decreased by 1.6% from 2014 to 8,707. The total number of “harem” males increased by 2.5% on the Pribilof Islands.
