Transitioning to a New Survey of Fishing Effort

May 19, 2020

This fact sheet explains the differences between new and legacy estimates of recreational saltwater fishing effort in the Mid-Atlantic.

In 2018, the Fishing Effort Survey replaced the Coastal Household Telephone Survey as the Marine Recreational Information Program's method of collecting information about recreational saltwater fishing activity. This fact sheet explains how the Fishing Effort Survey addresses the errors that caused the telephone survey to underestimate fishing effort in its final years, and how the program's transition to a more accurate and efficient method of data collection has impacted our understanding of fishing activity. It was prepared to supplement a presentation to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's Scientific and Statistical Committee.
