Community Social Vulnerability Indicators Tool

The Community Social Vulnerability Indicators mapping and graphing tool helps managers, researchers, and the public explore and analyze conditions in more than 4,600 coastal fishing communities in the United States. Communities can be compared geographically across 14 individual indicators covering the following categories: fishing dependence, demographics, land use change, economics, and sea level risk.

Community Social Vulnerability Indicator

The Community Social Vulnerability Indicator (CSVI) indicators perform two functions:

• Classify coastal communities by their degree of commercial and recreational fishing dependence using data on commercial landings and recreational fishing trips
• Describe the social, economic, and demographic conditions in coastal communities

NOAA Fisheries uses the CSVI for analyses and assessments mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act and Magnuson-Stevens Act. It also supports integrated ecosystem assessments and fishery disaster assessments.

Mapping and Data Tool

The CSVI tool makes detailed data browsable and available to download. It allows users to tailor the experience to best meet their needs. Users can:

• Select filters to specify and explore community and indicator data, and interact with data selections.
• Explore interactive maps that enable a geographic approach to data queries
• Graph the distribution of indicators for individual fishing communities, regions, and nationally
