Narragansett Lab Current Research and Features
Research at our Narragansett Laboratory covers a wide range of topics, making us a regional focal point for incorporating climate information into fisheries and endangered species assessments.
The Curious Case of a Shark and a Cephalopod
The Hawaii Community Tagging Program engaged in a collaborative effort to record an amazing encounter.
Skate Research in Alaska
Scientists at the Alaska Fisheries Center assess skate populations and research their biology, interactions with fisheries, response to environmental changes, and economics to provide the scientific advice needed to manage skate populations and potentiall
Sea Turtle Research in the Pacific
Researching sea turtles across the U.S. Pacific Islands region.
Sharks, Snapper, and Science—Kicking off the 27th Year of the Southeast Bottom Longline Survey
Bon voyage to the NOAA Ship Oregon II, its scientists, and crew beginning another year of the bottom longline survey. The 3-month survey will collect data on several species and their habitat.
Atlantic Salmon Research: An Ecosystem Approach
Salmon habitats are complex and support multiple species. We work across these systems and fish communities to better inform conservation efforts.
Research Surveys
Our scientists and partners collect data on the water, from aircrafts, and from shore to understand the abundance, distribution, and health of marine life and habitats. That data forms the scientific foundation for our management and conservation work.
New Seafloor Maps Reveal Habitat Sculpted by Ancient Glaciers
A higher definition view provides insight into the habitat that supports the Western Gulf of Alaska’s rich marine resources.
New Research Predicts Effects of Marine Heatwaves on Top Ocean Predators
Real-time shifts in marine ecosystems and species demand “climate-ready” fisheries. This new research will inform fisheries management.
Southern Resident Killer Whale Research in the Pacific Northwest
Research to support the conservation and recovery of endangered Southern Resident killer whales in the Pacific Northwest.
Where the Wild Things Are: Looking for Reef Predators in Deeper Waters
Using baited video cameras to survey fish and sharks in deeper coral reef habitats around Hawai‘i.
Together We Do More: The Collaborative Nature of Scientific Research
Our scientists routinely work with colleagues at federal and state agencies, academic research institutions, and non-profit organizations.
Cooperative Research Branch Fall Gulf of Maine Bottom Longline Surveys Completed
This hook-based fishery survey is conducted alongside fishing industry collaborators every fall and spring. Focusing on rocky habitat in the southern Gulf of Maine, the survey informs questions of abundance and distribution of species that live there.
Smalltooth Sawfish and Climate Change: Impacts of Habitat Loss on Range and Distribution
Unpredictable weather patterns, warming ocean temperatures, and rising sea levels caused by climate change reduce available habitat for the endangered smalltooth sawfish.
Historic Research Vessels in the Northeast
https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/new-england-mid-atlantic/about-us/historic-research-vessels-northeast
Since 1871, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center has had many research vessels that sailed out of Woods Hole, from the Fish Hawk (1880) which was the first floating marine hatchery, to the Henry B. Bigelow and the Gloria Michele which sail today.
