Scope Your Site

Actions that must be addressed before beginning the permit application process for shellfish aquaculture projects in Oregon:

Determine which commercial shellfish growing area you plan to cultivate shellfish in. Use the Oregon Explorer’s Estuary Shellfish Mariculture Explorer to review the commercial shellfish growing areas in a map view and ensure your proposed site complies with local land use plans.

Contact the appropriate Proprietary Coordinator at the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) to determine whether the lands are state-owned for your proposed farm site. Use DSL’s regional contact map to determine the Proprietary Coordinator for your county.

Contact the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Food Safety Program at 503-986-4721 to set up a pre-application meeting with ODA, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD). Prior to the meeting, all parties will assemble available resources regarding your proposed site.

Note, if your proposed farm site is within a commercial shellfish growing area and on state-owned tidelands, you need a shellfish plat lease from ODA (Step 2). If your proposed site is within a commercial shellfish growing area and not on state-owned lands, you need signed documentation from the landowner allowing you to farm. In this case, Step 2 is not required.
