Assessing the health of whales and dolphins within a life-history perspective

The Cetacean Health and Life History Program integrates a suite of research approaches to study the health of whales and dolphins at physiological, individual, and population levels. We maintain long term datasets that are used to assess health within the context of the animal’s life history and to diagnose health consequences which are driving population dynamics. 

Our work enhances abundance-based stock assessments because it identifies health responses to key threats to protected species populations and supports targeted management actions. The Cetacean Health and Life History Program has four major research themes: gray whale population studies, photogrammetry, biomarkers for physiological health, and cetacean strandings and collections.
