These data show the total population, total housing units, and median household income from the 2010 to 2016 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey. These values have been merged with the 2010 Decennial Census boundaries at the county level. Also included are records for the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and several independent cities in the New England area. |

ACS data: Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error (margin of error was omitted from this product but can be found in the original source data). In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to non-sampling error. The effect of non-sampling error is not represented in these tables. For additional information on the accuracy of ACS data please see https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/tech_docs/accuracy/MultiyearACSAccuracyofData2016.pdf. For Census data: While it is impossible to completely eliminate non-sampling error from an operation as large and complex as the decennial census, the Census Bureau attempts to control the sources of such error during the collection and processing operations. Join the downloaded tables to the updated Coastal Counties layer using the County FIPS attribute to copy the median household income from the ACS table and the total population and total housing units from the Census table into the associated attributes in the Coastal Counties layer. Download Census and ACS data from American Factfinder as comma-delimited (*.csv) documents. Delete extraneous attributes. Merge select omitted independent cities from TIGER/Line Shape with Coastal Counties (Washington DC, Fairfax city, Falls Church city, Fredricksburg city, Manassas city, Manassas Park city, Richmond city, and Colonial Heights city). Utilize topology to align polygon edges. |
