Instrument Type: imager, Operational Mode: geostationary, Collection Type: spin-scanning, Other Information: The instrument uses a flexible scan system to produce full-Earth disc images and area scans of various sizes. Scan selection allows for rapid continuous monitoring of regional scale phenomena. Data from the VISSR instrument aboard SMS-1, -2, and GOES-1 to -3 are mostly in the mode-A data format. Images from VISSR were produced every half-hour. More frequent images at seven and fifteen minute intervals were made for special weather events.
