Legacy Data Management Plan (DMP) Conversion
Table of Contents
Overview
In Release 6.0.0, InPort introduced a new, dedicated Catalog Item type for DMPs, aligned with the latest version of the NOAA DMP Template.
The new Legacy Data Management Plan (DMP) Conversion feature allows users to create a new DMP Catalog Item from an existing Legacy DMP.
What Is a Legacy DMP?
Previously, DMPs were generated as PDFs from within a Data Set record. This Legacy DMP export process was based on an older version of the NOAA DMP Template and has since been deprecated. Users should no longer use Data Sets to produce DMPs. Instead, DMPs should be created using the new, dedicated DMP Catalog Item type.
The Legacy DMP Conversion feature provides a way for users with existing Legacy DMP data to migrate it into the new DMP system.
Differences Between Old and New DMPs
The Legacy DMP export used NOAA DMP Template v2.0.1 (2015-01-01).
The new DMP Catalog Item type is based on NOAA DMP Template version v3.1 (2025-02-11).
There are substantial differences between these versions. As a result:
- Some information from Legacy DMPs may no longer apply or may not map directly to the new format.
- Certain questions in the new template have been reworded or refocused, altering the expected response.
- Users should carefully review all converted data to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- The new template is more comprehensive, so additional input will be required to complete the updated DMP record.
The latest NOAA DMP Template (v3.1) supersedes the version published in the 2024 NOAA Data Management Handbook. Users should be aware that the Handbook version is now outdated. By using InPort's DMP Catalog Item feature, you can ensure that you are working with the most current and compliant version of the NOAA DMP Template.
How to Convert a Legacy DMP
To convert a legacy DMP, you must have an Author or higher role to create a new Data Management Plan.
- Login to InPort.
- Navigate to the Data Set record that has the DMP information you wish to convert. (Technically, any Data Set record can be converted).
- In the secondary navigation bar, click on View As > DMP (Deprecated)
- Click the Convert to New DMP button.
- On the next screen, update the New DMP Name if desired.
- Enter the Parent Cat ID of the Project under which you wish to create the new DMP. You must have an Author or higher role on the Project to create a DMP under it.
- Note that DMPs can only be created under Projects at this time. A suggested Parent Cat ID will be provided based on the Data Set you are converting (usually the parent of the Data Set if it is a Project).
- Click Create DMP to proceed. Note that your existing Data Set will not be modified -- the relevant information is only written out to the new DMP record.
- You will then be automatically redirected to the newly created DMP record.
- We recommend that you carefully review the new DMP record; and in particular, the Comments section of the new DMP, where we will output any warnings that were encountered during the conversion process. Feel free to clear out the Comments field once you have reviewed the record.
