Hawaii Island Hawksbill Recovery Project

A hawksbill turtle nesting beach monitoring, conservation and public education program on the Big Islands of Hawaii

The project gathers much needed population demographic information, necessary for future stock assessment efforts as well as management policy development, while concurrently implementing necessary conservation activities to reduce nest/hatchling predation and raise community awareness. Additionally, NMFS & USFWS partner to organize and convene annual stakeholder meetings (Hawksbill Recovery Group) to provide an update of the previous season?s nesting, data collection, and management activities. PIRO grant support provides approximately 1/3 of total program funding provided to the World Turtle Trust (subgrant to the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit at the Research Corporation, University of Hawaii) to support activities at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO).
