Abstract:

Guam's Dept of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) sea turtle nesting beach monitoring, stranding program and education & outreach program.

Purpose:

Guam's sea turtle program aims to: 1) establish long-term monitoring at index sites to advance demographic information for population assessments; 2) promote conservation and management efforts through public education and outreach; 3) promote and support a volunteer "Haggan watch" network to gather opportunistic sea turtle nesting data; 4) maintain a sea turtle stranding network; and 5) provide educational outreach to the public. Facilitate and encourage Guam territory government and local partners to draft a locally-relevant marine turtle conservation and management plan and apply for ESA Section 6 funding to receive full programmatic support for their protected species program.
