Summary
The Benthic Resources (ROV) Group is part of the Fisheries Resources Division (FRD) at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC). The Benthic Resources Group uses remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to monitor populations of fishes and invertebrates in deep-water ecosystems. The Benthic Resources Group's objectives include:
monitoring the recovery of the endangered white abalone (Haliotis sorenseni),
developing methods to improve the accuracy, precision and efficiency of fisheries surveys and thus resulting stock assessments, and
improving species identifications through the use of high-resolution imagery.
Our primary research tools since 2001 are ROVs, including our Phantom DS4 ROV 'Sebastes', and our newest high-definition high-voltage (HDHV) ROV 'Arc'. Much of our work is done in collaboration with the Advanced Survey Technologies (AST) Group.
