Hawaii noncommercial fishermen's attitudes and preferences survey: 2015

NOAA’s Saltwater Recreational Fishing Attitudes and Preference Survey is a national survey focusing specifically on understanding saltwater anglers’ attitudes and preferences regarding the management of recreational (non-commercial) fishing opportunities.The Hawaii version of the survey was implemented between June and August 2015

Results from the 2015 Hawaii Saltwater Recreational Fishing Attitudes and Preference Survey will augment existing regional data collection efforts regarding the human dimensions of recreational fishing and national data collection efforts focusing on catch, effort, participation, and recreational fishing expenditures. The data collected from this survey provides NOAA and others with quantitative baseline measures of recreational fishermen’s attitudes and preferences regarding the management of saltwater fishing resources in the State of Hawaii

Hard copy interview forms are locked in a secured area. The electronic data are stored on government computers with all the proper Government security measures in place, including firewalls, individual username login, and password protection.

A total of 3500 surveys were mailed to fishermen across the State of Hawaii and 1180 survey responses were received. The population of noncommercial fishermen in the State of Hawaii is unknown, and no efforts are made to extend findings to population level.

After the data were received through mail survey booklets (paper), data were entered into the data entry file (MS Access database). The entered data were subject to logic tests and appropriate skip patterns. The data were assessed for outliers and cleaned. Follow-up calls were made to respondents when responses needed clarification. Finally, the cleaned data were used to generate data reports and summaries.

These data are still be cleaned and are not ready for dissemination. Data collection continued through August 2015. Efforts to disseminate can be arranged upon request.

Data is securely stored in PIFSC's server with password protection.

Only staff who work on the project can access to the data.
