Abstract: |
These data represent a cost-earnings study of the boat based fishing in the Mariana Archipelago fielded in 2011. Data collected include fisher classification, vessel characteristics, levels of investment, trip-level expenditures, fishing behavior, market participation, social aspects of the fishery, and demographics. Additionally, attitudes and perceptions towards fisheries management agencies and current and future management tools are described. |
Purpose: |
The purpose of the cost-earnings study was to update our understanding of the economic and social characteristics of the small boat fishing across the Mariana Archipelago (Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). Collection of these baseline data provides managers with an updated understanding of potential behavioral responses and impacts from future fishing regulations. |

Data Quality
Representativeness: |
A total of 259 fishermen completed the survey. There are no reliable estimates of fishing participation in Guam and CNMI but knowledgeable community members attest to the representativeness of the sample. |
---|---|
Accuracy: |
No efforts are made to expand to the population as there are no population estimates available. |
Quality Control Procedures Employed: |
After the data were recorded through primary in-person data collection methods (survey booklet), data were entered into the data entry file (MS Access database). The entered data were subject to logic tests and appropriate skip patterns. The data were assessed for outliers and cleaned. Finally, the cleaned data were used to generate data reports and summaries. |
