Full Citation Examples
This is a time-series dataset of trip expenditure data including actual fishing trip expenses, input usage, and input prices, for boat-based reef fish, bottomfish, and pelagic fisheries in CNMI, American Samoa, and Guam. Specifically, the surveys intend to collect information on: gallons of fuel used for the fishing trip, price per gallon of fuel, cost of ice used, cost of bait & chum used, cost of fishing gear lost, and the engine type of the boat. These economic data are collected through an add-on to boat-based creel surveys initiated by local fisheries agencies in CNMI, American Samoa, and Guam to collect fisheries dependent data. The data collection program was implemented in April 2009 in CNMI, August 2009 in American Samoa, and September 2011 in Guam.

Abstract: |
Purpose: |
The objective of the data collection project is to collect fishing expense data for small boat fisheries in CNMI, American Samoa, and Guam in the three island areas to support effective fishery management on a continuous basis. |

Data Quality
Completeness Report: |
The economic data collection is an add-on to boat-based creel surveys initiated by local fisheries agencies in American Samoa, Guam, and CNMI to collect fisheries dependent data. The response rate of the economic data has increased over time, and currently about 70%-80% of creel survey respondents also provide trip-level economic data. |
---|---|
Quality Control Procedures Employed: |
The quality of the data was controlled throughout the data life cycle including data collection, data entry, data cleaning, and data storage. Data were collected following rigid statistical method (e.g. interviewers were trained to get familiar with the questionnaire for in-person survey). Data entry file was developed to minimize data entry errors, including setting data ranges. Data were cleaned with outliers. Data files were stored in PIFSC’s server with password protection. |

If To Be Determined, Unable to Archive, or No Archiving Intended, Explain: |
These data are Sensitive (business information). Efforts to disseminate can be arranged upon request, but the data are currently out of scope for the Data directive. |
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: | No delay expected |
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?: |
Data is securely stored in PIFSC's server with password protection. Only staff who work on the project can access to the data. |
Lineage
Lineage Statement: |
After the data were collected through in-person interview, data were entered into the data entry file developed by WPacFIN. Then the entered data were provided to the Socioeconomics division of PIFSC for cleaning process including logic checking, skipping patterns, and outliers. Finally the cleaned data were used to generate data report. |
