Abstract

This database contains ichthyoplankton data collected as part of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) program and other cruises that were designed to assess the status coastal pelagic species and the California Current ecosystem from 1951 to present. The primary data are eggs and larvae captured in ring or bongo nets (oblique tows), Calvet or pairovet nets (vertical tows), and manta nets (surface tows).

Item Identification

Title: California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI)Database
Short Name: California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) Database
Status: In Work
Publication Date: 2013
Abstract:

This database contains ichthyoplankton data collected as part of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) program and other cruises that were designed to assess the status coastal pelagic species and the California Current ecosystem from 1951 to present. The primary data are eggs and larvae captured in ring or bongo nets (oblique tows), Calvet or pairovet nets (vertical tows), and manta nets (surface tows).

Purpose:

The CalCOFI program was established in 1949 to investigate factors relating to the collapse of the sardine fishery off California, but over the years its focus has shifted to the study of the marine environment off the coast of California and the management of its living resources.

Notes:

The CalCOFI program is a cooperative effort by NOAA, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Additional details about the program and data that are not maintained by NOAA may be accessed at www.calcofi.org

Data Quality

Comparability:

Oblique tows changed from ring to bongo nets in 1977. See:

Ohman, M. D. and P. E. Smith. 1995. A comparison of zooplankton sampling methods in the CalCOFI time series. CalCOFI Rep. 36:153-158.

Thompson, A. R., McClatchie, S., Weber, E. D., Watson, W., and Lennert-Cody, C. E. 2017. Correcting for Bias in Calcofi Ichthyoplankton Abundance Estimates Associated with the 1977 Transition from Ring to Bongo Net Sampling. California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations Reports, 58: 113-123.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Data are range- and error-checked via a computer program on data entry. A subset of ichthyoplankton samples are re-sorted to verify counts.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: Yes
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: Yes
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: 3-4 years
If Delay is Longer than Latency of Automated Processing, Indicate Under What Authority Data Access is Delayed:

Sorting samples to extract and identify ichthyoplankton in the laboratory may take up to 4 years, depending on cruise, at the current level of staffing.

Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: NCEI-MD
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: 3-4 years
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

The working database is a Microsoft SQL Server database on a server at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center which has all appropriate access controls.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

Data are collected as part of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations program. Data collection methods, cruise schedules, and sampling effort are described at www.calcofi.org.

A twin-winged surface-towed plankton net with a 0.505-mm nylon square-mesh codend.

Instrument 3

CC ID: 857683
Identifier: PV
Instrument / Gear: Gear
Instrument Type: Pairovet Net
Description:

The Pairovet is a vertically towed, paired ichthyoplankton net consisting of two 25-cm hoops with 150µm square nylon mesh nets.
