Summary

Description

The Metadata Project serves the purpose to feed the NMFS Enterprise Data Management System. That system centralizes fisheries information on the biology, the physical environment, documents, and regulations. Through a Web interface, the general public has access to that information through search features and catalog browsing. The Data Management System has several components, or libraries, corresponding to the various NMFS science centers, regional offices, headquarters, and to non-federal entities, such as the Alaska Fisheries Information Network or the Gulf States Fisheries Commission (GSMFC). As a whole, twenty five libraries are stored in the Data Management System.

Abstract:

The Metadata Project serves the purpose to feed the NMFS Enterprise Data Management System. That system centralizes fisheries information on the biology, the physical environment, documents, and regulations. Through a Web interface, the general public has access to that information through search features and catalog browsing. The Data Management System has several components, or libraries, corresponding to the various NMFS science centers, regional offices, headquarters, and to non-federal entities, such as the Alaska Fisheries Information Network or the Gulf States Fisheries Commission (GSMFC). As a whole, twenty five libraries are stored in the Data Management System.

Purpose:

The Gulf Fisheries Information Network (GulfFIN) Metadata library houses artifacts that define programs, activities, data sets and documents under the Fisheries Information Network (FIN) umbrella for Commercial Fisheries Infomation Network (comFIN) and the Southeast Recreational Fisheries Information Network [RecFin(SE)].

Supplemental Information:

The Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission (GSMFC) is an organization of the five states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida), whose coastal waters are the Gulf of Mexico. This compact, authorized under Public Law 81-66, was signed by the representatives of the Governors of the five Gulf States on July 16, 1949, at Mobile, Alabama. It has as its principal objective the conservation, development, and full utilization of the fishery resources of the Gulf of Mexico, to provide food, employment, income, and recreation to the people of these United States.
