Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel Fishery

This data set contains the logbook data from U.S.A. Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessels (CPFV) fishing in the U.S.A. EEZ and in waters off of Baja California, from 1980 to present. These fishing vessels carry sport fishermen and target both HMS and non-HMS species. California CPFV operators submit mandatory logbooks to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). CPFV operators in Washington and Oregon that target albacore submit mandatory logbooks to SWFSC since the implementation of the HMS Fisheries Management Plan in 2005. Logbook data contain information on locations fished, ports of landing, number of anglers, hours fished, species, number of fish kept, and interactions with marine mammals.

Logbook data are collected and processed by the CDFW. The data are used by NMFS and CDFW to monitor the fishery and contribute to stock assessments.

CPFV logbook data is requested by SWFSC from CDFW each year in early spring.

Attributes describe areas, dates, catches, fishing effort, sizes of fish, protected species interactions

Hard copy data are locked in a secured area. Data are stored in files on government computers with all of the proper Government security measures in place

NMFS/SWFSC personnel need a signed Statement of non-disclosure agreement to access the detailed data. There are no constraints on access to summarized data.

All use of the data sets should be cleared with NMFS/SWFSC and CDFW for California data. All products (papers, publications and data summaries) that include data from data sets owned by CDFW must be approved by CDFW.

All vessels are required to submit logbook information. Coverage is between 80 and 100 percent

Logbook data are completed by vessel captains and can be suspect.

MSA

Data are stored on agency servers following standard agency security policies

CDFW supplies the completed forms or data files to SWFSC for editing, data entry and maintenance. Charter vessel operators from Oregon and Washington mail completed forms directly to SWFSC where staff edit, enter and manage the data.
