Abstract

Marine recreational fishing is a popular pastime across the United States that generates significant economic impacts to both local economies and to the nation. In this survey, the level of fishing expenditures for anglers was quantified within each coastal state and the U.S. as a whole. The primary objectives of the national expenditure surveys are to collect trip expenditures for an angler’s most recent marine recreational fishing trip and to collect annual expenditures on durable goods used for marine recreational fishing. Additional objectives include obtaining a profile of the most recent marine recreational fishing trip and collecting demographic information on marine recreational anglers.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Voluntary survey of anglers. Individual angler responses for a series of trip and durable good expenditure questions, by mode of trip (shore, private boat, for-hire) and 12 month expenditures on durable goods. Anglers grouped into residents or non-residents of the surveyed state. A non-response test showed no difference between respondents and non-respondents for a series of demograhpic variables. Response rates varied across states.

Accuracy:

Recall period for durable goods is prior 12 months so a recall bias may be present.

Bias:

As with all intercept-based surveys, there may be an avidity bias in that anglers who fish more often may be over-represented in the sample frame. If they have a different pattern of expenditures for durable goods, this may influence the results.

Comparability:

May be compared to a similar study done in 2006.

Completeness Measure:

Good coverage in certain states, smaller states had higher non-response rates.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Data checked by contractor and NMFS staff

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

Data were collected from January to December 2011 in each coastal state using an economic-add on to the MRIP angler intercept survey on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, Puerto Rico, and in Hawaii. In California, Oregon, Washington, Texas and Alaska, mail surveys were sent to licensed anglers who took a saltwater fishing trip during 2011. Contract firms were hired to manage the mail survey process and NMFS staff received the raw data and assembled the final dataset.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 216474
Description:

data was collected directly from recreational anglers via an angler survey using a contract firm, data was delivered to NMFS economists in Office of Science and Technology, in a SAS format.
