Summary

Description

An ongoing issue of human impact on cetaceans in Hawaiian waters is false killer whale longline interactions. Acoustic cues have been previously implicated in attracting cetaceans to longline fishing gear, which may result in hooking or entanglement of whales. In Hawaii, false killer whales from the pelagic stock have been seriously injured or killed from interactions with the deep-set longline fishery. The rate at which they have been taken exceeds the potential biological removal (PBR) level and the pelagic stock has been deemed “Strategic” under the MMPA. In partnership with the PIFSC’s Fisheries Research and Monitoring Division, the CRP will outfit a set of small, autonomous recorders for attachment to longline gear.

Title: Longline HARPs

Abstract:

Purpose:

Miniature HARPs will be used acoustically monitor the Hawaii-based longline fishery for interactions with cetaceans, specifically false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens). These recorders will be capable of continuous acoustic recording at 100 kHz sample rate for the duration of the longline set (up to 18 hours). Continuous recordings will fully characterize the interactions (including depredation) between cetaceans and fishing gear. Continuous, full-bandwidth data provide descriptions of vessel and gear sounds that may be attracting animals or yield information on entanglement, and will provide data adequate for identification of false killer whale sounds versus those of other cetaceans.
