Abstract

This project investigates foraging behavior of Hawaiian monk seals by conducting telemetry studies. During these studies, live seals are instrumented with dive recorders, crittercams, and other instruments to determine foraging locations and dive and foraging behavior.

Item Identification

Title: HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Crittercam and other animal-mounted camera videos
Status: In Work
Creation Date: 1995-01-01
Abstract:

This project investigates foraging behavior of Hawaiian monk seals by conducting telemetry studies. During these studies, live seals are instrumented with dive recorders, crittercams, and other instruments to determine foraging locations and dive and foraging behavior.

Purpose:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is the lead agency responsible for the recovery of the Hawaiian monk seal. Each year the NMFS Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Division, Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program conducts studies at the main breeding sites to provide information necessary to evaluate (1) the status and trends of the monk seal subpopulations, (2) natural history traits such as survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits, and (3) the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth. The purpose of telemetry studies is to define Hawaiian monk seal foraging behavior to better understand the links between environment, prey variability, and demography.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Seal size/sex classes are not equally represented in these data due to animal constraints such as size and reproductive status

Accuracy:

No procedures for quality control. This is raw video footage directly transferred to digital database. File sizes were compared between original video files and transferred files to ensure complete record.

Bias:

Seal size/sex classes are not equally represented in these data due to animal constraints such as size and reproductive status

Completeness Report:

File sizes were compared between original video files and transferred files to ensure complete record.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

No procedures for quality control. This is raw video footage directly transferred to digital database. File sizes were compared between original video files and transferred files to ensure complete record.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: No
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: Yes
