Survey of Hawaii Resident Resource Users' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of Coral Reefs in Two Hawaii Priority Sites

This survey collects data regarding resident resource users' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the condition of coral reef and watershed resources, current threats to those resources, and a variety of potential management strategies.

Hard copy interview forms are locked in a secured area. The electronic data

are stored on government computers with all the proper Government security

measures in place, including firewalls, individual username login, and

Given the level of fiscal and human resources available to conduct the research, and the extensive geographic area to be covered by the effort, it clearly was not possible to consult with an exhaustive sample of shoreline users. Rather, the research effort was designed to allow for documentation of the range of relevant knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions held by persons who currently live near or frequently visit the two shoreline study sites.

The quality of the data was controlled throughout the data life cycle including

data collection, data entry, data cleaning, and data storage. Data were

collected following rigid statistical methods (e.g. survey administrators were trained to become familiar with the survey). Data entry files were

developed to minimize data entry errors, including setting data ranges,

embedding skip patterns, and multiple choice questions were set with predetermined choices. Data were cleaned. Data files were stored in PIFSC’s server with password protection.

After the data were collected through in-person survey administration, data were entered into an Excel database. Then the entered data were checked and

cleaned. Finally the cleaned data were used to general data report.
