Abstract

The imagery posted on this site is of the Florida panhandle and surrounding regions after Hurricane Dennis made landfall. The regions photographed range from Pensacola to Panama City, Florida. The aerial photograph missions were conducted by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division the day after Dennis made landfall, July 11 and concluded July 13. The images were acquired from an altitude of 7,500 feet, using an Emerge/Applanix Digital Sensor System (DSS). A total of 8 image mosaics were generated for this time period and are available for download.

Abstract:

Purpose:

This imagery was acquired by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division to support NOAA national security and emergency response requirements. This draft product was generated for use by emergency managers for visual analysis of damage in the landfall area. It is not intended for mapping, charting or navigation. In addition, it will be used for ongoing research efforts for testing and developing standards for airborne digital imagery.

Supplemental Information:

The ground sample distance (GSD) for each pixel is 50 cm (1.64 feet). Image file size is between 5 MB and 25 MB. In an effort to acquire imagery in a timely manner after the landfall of the Hurricane Dennis, clouds may be present in the imagery.

Description:

Individual images were directly georeferenced from post processed exterior orientation parameters using the Leica Photogrammetry Suite 8.7 module of ERDAS Imagine and USGS 1/3 Arc Second DEMs (~10 m). The individual ortho images were then mosaiced using the Mosaic Tool in Imagine. Mosaics were cropped using area's of interest to allow a narrow area of overlap between. Data were converted from Imagine format to JP2 using the Export Tool in Imagine.
